first, then, let us observe that we find ourselves at the meeting point of earth, air, and sea- of the solid globe with its gaseous and liquid envelopes. why should the air be gaseous, the sea liquid, the land solid?

these are questions we may understand later; meanwhile, we simply note the facts. they will gain significance later.

do not forget to note as part of the scene the life-forms- the plants and the animals, the birds and cows browsing in meditative laziness on the sands;- all the manifold forms of life have their share in the work of the world.

let us consider this matter a little further. one of those beasts over there is only a calf. by and by we may suppose it will be as big as its mother. then it will be heavier than it is now-will it not? it will represent a larger mass of material.

where is that excess of material to come from? is it new matter? no, it is only transferred matter.

you have continual change of state or position going on in the matter of the world, but never increase or decrease in its quantity.

creation of music is a transfer of energy, and my interest is to understand the source of the energy that feeds the motivation to create.
